Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Can you cross Akhal-Teke's with Mustangs? I got an Akhal mare and a Mustang male. Both purebreds. Any info?

There are no restrictions on what breeds you can crossbreed. However, you should always consider what skills you want to enhance and if they align between the chosen breeds - for example, you don't generally want to mix a breed with strong trot with another that has the least skill in it. Both akhal-teke and mustang have strong stamina and should work for either cross-country or cutting; you'll notice the lower gallop on akhal-teke takes away from the mustang's tendency for it and thus switches the optimal competition from barrel racing to cutting.

What is the best horse breed to cross an Akhal mare with?

It depends solely on what you want to achieve. Do you want to raise a particular skill the teke lacks? Or cross with another breed with high stamina and fit for cross-country? I have a list of each of Howrse's breeds top skills in my EC forum, it might prove useful when comparing breeds.

If you want to breed with another cross-country race, arabians and gypsy vanners are two possible choices. Or if you want to lower stamina and raise dressage and jumping to increase your chances of winning at the cost of competition difficulty, maybe try a cross with a morgan.

If that's definitely the cross you want to use, you just have to make sure to use higher GP parents with 100 blup, and you can also use Aphrodite's Tears to increase the IBS.

The foal's GP is roughly the average of the parents, so there isn't really a way to manipulate the genetics any further than that.

Are there ways to crossbreed one horse with another to get an entirely different breed? As is, (although Morab is not a breed in this game) say I had a Morgan mare and I found a Arab stallion, and I got a foal classified as a Morab. Is that what happens if there are really two breeds that were the foundation for another?

No, you cannot achieve a breed that does not exist in the game. You can personally refer to the horse as a Morab, Anglo Arabian ect but the horse will only be either an Arabian or a Morgan, depending on which breed is dominant.

Third generation babies are here! I'm honestly thrilled with these. I can't wait to BLUP them and work on a fourth generation line.

More experienced breeders, how do the percentages behave? Say, if I have a 50/50 crossbreed that I'll cross with a purebred third breed, will the resulting foal carry a 25/25/50 mix, or will it be 33/33/34? I'm assuming it's the first?

The foal takes half from each parent, so it will be a 50/25/25
Here's one

@Legacy

Pertaining to the 50/50 crosses that I was talking about a few weeks ago. I contacted Howrse and they said that it is a 93% chance of the foal having the sire's breed listed 1st. Given that information, I am not too sure how to continue on with my lines.

Hmm, that's interesting. I wonder if the odds changed? I'd have to look back, but I think my older crosses mostly had the dominant breed listed 2nd. Unless I just got lucky then. I suppose it does make sense to have the dominant breed listed first most of the time, but it's unfortunate when we're trying to manipulate our breeding linesdefault smiley (lol)

Thank you for the update!

This was what was said regarding the change:

"Thanks for contacting us! With 50/50 crossbreeds, the first breed listed is almost always the father's breed. On occasion, it's possible to see the mare's breed, but mostly it's the stallion's. This was something that was adjusted several years ago."

I did some math and figured that you can get 12 breedings out of a mare. That means that only .84 foal will have the dominant breed listed second, not even a whole foal default smiley (lol).

And that completely ignores the odds of male vs female.

Hi all!

Any recommendations for some 50/50 crosses that can produce rosette-level horses? If there are any with Irish Hunters in that'd be great. But really any suggestions would be helpful - I used to cross breed on the UK server but its bee yearsdefault smiley (lol)

I'd try mixing an irish hunter with trakehner to bump up gallop, possible lipizzan for reining competitions. For classical, maybe try some breed meant for cross-country, like akhal-teke or shagya arabian. Do not use gypsy vanner, as the high gallop will keep the irish's top skills aimed at reining, unless you want to make a cross that can do both. In that case, irish vanner could be fun.

I have a forum post in my EC that might help you consider the top skills you want to look for between breeds.

@limecyanide

Thanks! The topic in your EC forum is super helpful. I've decided to cross the hunter with the Lippizan. I'm thinking IH stud to a Lippizan mare, and I'll target the foal towards reining comps! I can't wait to see how this turns out. Thanks for the advice default smiley :d

Check out my most recent project. Demonio is currently ranked first in Gallop for Paint Horses and tomorrow he will offically be ranked 2nd in the elite of Paint Horses. I am now working on getting his gallop wins.

Here are a couple other projects I have had. Check out their Gallop competition wins.

What is the best cross for Western comps?
Question:

Mare 75/25 bred Aus Pony/Selle
Will the foal be Aus Pony or Selle?

The foal will be Australian pony. If you do the math, the foal will be 62.5% Australian Pony and 37.5% Selle.
