I do like many of the new coats, however some have abnormally long legs, or necks that don't fit with the head. And it seems to me like the chest protrudes much farther than the neck and legs, with the different components of the body joining awkwardly in varying angles rather than flowing somewhat, like the body of a horse would.
It seems the same way with some of the foals too.

Also fresians and gypsy vanners definitely need feathers. One thing I love about the current coats is some of the muscle definition (Well I guess thats what you could call it) That is seen through the shading, these new coats lack that. (Possibly an improvement, or intended affect)

Not bashing the artist, just my opinion on the coats. I think the artist is very talented to do that to start with just personally I would change a few things.

I find it kinda hilarious people being like "I DIDN'T VOTE FOR THIS, BLAH BLAH BLAH" Like omg sorry I didn't realise you knew exactly what every other player in the game voted for..
Some players like the new coats some don't, not everyone is going to agree on something as subjective as the aesthetics of the horses. Calm down.

They said 'I' not 'We'. default smiley ;) And we all know that we won't ever all agree. It's simply the nature of the human race. (No offence if there are any aliens reading this! default smiley :p)

Lots of players posted saying the donkey coats would not be changing. So far you're the only one who has said otherwise.. default smiley :)

Actually, on the page right before a player claimed to have a picture of it. I PMed the suggested person and never got the picture. Don't worry though, I would think that toodefault smiley ;)

Definitely short heads. I agree, it would be a good idea to look at the breed standards when making the coats.

Yes it may slightly lower the GA sales (As people may be happy with a coat for a start) but there are always going to be people who dislike it, or I adore the current Arabian and Marwari coats, I still put GA's on them as they look so beautiful.

I think differentiating the coats between quarter horses, Apaloosa's ect would be a start and then somewhat following guidelines.

I dislike the Friesian neck. It looks quite abnormaldefault smiley xd

Maybe the reason that I'm so philosophical about the new coats is that Morgans are my main interest and they have never looked even vaguely like the breed standard. So I've never been very happy with the coat and use GAs liberally.

I'm sure that Howrse could require graphics that resemble breed standards from the artists, but they may be worried about copyright issues. Or hoping to stimulate GA sales.

I don't think there is anything wrong about pointing out the shortcomings of game graphics. This is a business staffed by professionals, not a school competition. Would you be so protective of bankers or auto manufacturers? Artists don't get a free pass. Professional graphic artists put their product out there just like any other professional. Would you not have criticized Windows Vista because the software engineers would feel bad? Would you not have done everything to get rid of it as fast as possible?

Civility is important, but that does not mean that you do not criticize. It means you don't call people names or personally insult them. Criticizing the graphics is not a personal insult, however uncomfortable it makes the artist.

It is relatively easy to obtain licenses to use copyrighted material legally, especially in the digital age. The royalties or licensing fees for many images are much more affordable than you think, since the stock image market (not to be confused with the stock market default smiley :p ) has been flooded for years. Many have been released into the public domain or given a creative commons license that allows commercial use without expectation of monetary compensation. If you look around at books, magazines, newspapers, stationary, clothing and gift items, professional blogs, and more, you'll notice that copyrighted images are used legally all the time. So, copyright may come into play with the new graphics, but I think other factors may have a stronger role in Owlient's decisions.

I would not be surprised if brand was their first consideration. Brand is the overall look and impression of a product, service, company, etc. A highly marketable brand is unique, recognizable, and consistent. Branding may be as simple as sticking a logo on something, but it can also consist of a specific color scheme (yellow and green at Howrse), font, and stylized graphics. I suspect that the new horse graphics are stylized in order to create a more consistent, unique, and recognizable brand. Yes, totally realistic graphics would have made many of us swoon, but it would also have looked too generic from a marketing perspective. Stylized graphics may also allow them to trademark their brand and make it easier to defend it. It is much more difficult to trademark realism and defend it. The risk is that it can be challenging to satisfy the masses with stylized graphics, especially when many vocal people are calling for realism.

I do not doubt that Golden Apples and other special coats influenced decisions, too. Pretty base horses are pretty, but they don't generate a profit for Owlient. Golden Apples and special coats do.

Yes, I am disappointed with some of the V4 graphics and I am head over heels for others. I'll say no more about the ones I don't like, but please forgive me if I drool in public over the ones that I love.

Oh, no! My condolences.

I'm concerned about the donkeys. I don't recall that their base graphics have ever changed. Have they? Since the dynamic between BLUP, skills, and GP in donkeys runs contrary to every other species on Howrse, they stand alone. I don't think they are as popular as Owlient hoped. I love my long ears, but I wonder if the lack of an update is a sign that Owlient plans to discontinue them. Everything else in the game from aesthetics to navigation to equestrian centers has undergone or is about to undergo a major overhaul. Even our forums have been changed. Donkeys remain untouched. I fear that the donkeys are left out because there is no point in fixing something that is slated to be scrapped. default smiley :s

Perhaps they are fine... there are a lot of donkeys out there, you know. And they aren't really that popular only because they are expensive and hard to get, and you can only get three with two donkeys and even then, public coverings are rare. so the number of existing donkeys will never go as high as, say, unis, for instance.default smiley (8)
