History
Falabellas are a breed of miniature horse, and are a popular pet among the equestrian community because of their sweet and personality. (As well as their cute looks!) The breed has been around since the mid 19th century (around 1845), when they were bred by an Argentinean farmer. The Falabellas have an unusually long life span, with some living until their mid 40s! Today the Falabella is used for many things, such as free-jumping, in-hand showing, and much more.
The Stars of Literature
If I asked you about the difference between horses and ponies, you would probably give one of these replies:
"Horses are over 14.2 hh, while ponies are under 14.2 hh!"
" Um... Well I think they have different proportions...?"
"Horses are so much better!"
"Ponies are cuter! Duh!"
The first two are true. So if ponies are under 14.2 hh, then Falabellas should totally qualify, right? Well... not exactly. See, horses and ponies are built different. They have different movements, proportions, and overall builds. (maybe I will make a presentation on the difference? Tell me you opinion please!) Falabellas have all the proportions and characteristics of a full sized horse, only on a much smaller scale.
Selective Breeding
Here are the pros and cons of owning a Falabella (speaking as someone who has never owned one) just incase you were looking for one of these adorable companions!
PROS
- Great personality: friendly, sweet, gentle with children
- Long life spans
- Easy to train
- Take up less space (THEY STILL NEED A PROPER LIVING ARRANGEMENT WITH SHELTER AND PASTURE!)
CONS
- Can be hard to look after (many people overfeed them)
- Can have some health problems (I won't get into them here but just know they include skeletal complications, dental issues, and lots genetic illnesses.)
DO NOT GET ONE BECAUSE THEY ARE CUTE! Falabellas are real horses with real needs and personalities, and because of their selective breeding have many health issues!
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you learned something new and that you will come back next week for the next horse!
(If you have any requests/suggestions for what horse I should do next, please message me, I am open to ideas!)

Have an amazing week!
