I sell horses pretty freely, and usually in the direct sales. I usually have some available at a low price. Now asking to buy a horse I do -not- have in sales is tricky. If the horse is not for sale, then.. it's kind of obvious I want to keep it. I will consider serious offers. No, I don't trade a horse for a horse. I want Equus or Passes for horses I sell.
If I place negotiable on my sale price, be reasonable. If I am asking for say.. 500 and 3 passes.. do not offer me 20,000.. I will laugh at you.. and so will my friends. I say 1 pass = 100,000 on all my sales. So if you don't have passes and wish to buy a horse I have up for 500 and 3 passes.. then offer 300,000. If that doesn't seem reasonable to you.. then don't buy the horse. Easy peasy!
