Falling Off a Horse

Hi everybody!
I am an 11 year old player in real life.
I LOVE horses!
I take riding lessons at a place near my place and its really fun.
One time I was riding on the horse named Bess, and she suddenly got spooked
by something!
I fell off and got dirt all over my face.
Luckily no serious injuries or concussions.
Now I get a little scared when riding horses.
Do any of you now how to get rid of this fear?

Thank you!default smiley *-)default smiley *-)

It will go away little by little if you just keep riding. It is okay to be nervous it is ok to take your time. If you think more about what you're doing and what you're learning than what MIGHT happen it will probably just fade away.

If something specific is bothering you, maybe you feel really unbalanced, or maybe you are now just worried about going fast talk to your instructor. They'll have ideas. Maybe you want to do some lessons on the small round pen instead of the big ring. Maybe you even want to do some lunge line lessons. Just focus on what you're doing and let the confidence come back.

I recently got a fear of jumping as I had a series of bad jumping days where I fell multiple times per class. I couldn't even jump lower than I used to so I was devastated! What made it worse was that I kept comparing myself to those who didn't fall, and it made me very stressed about my level of riding and caused tension issues, making the matters worse.

As silly as it is, I discovered a youtube short that people would submit videos of their falls and I realized that, hey, falling is part of the learning process. It tells us exactly what we need to work on, especially balance and strong lower legs. It also reminds us that horses are alive, they think, they react. Being aware of your surroundings can help to anticipate spooks!

Its normal to be afraid, but the fear will go away eventually. Remind yourself to be confident, and the horses will react to your energy! You got up after the fall, pat the dirt off, and hopped right back on that beauty, and that's the first step to building confidence default smiley :)

I would suggest learning how to fall properly (in a way that minimizes injuries) and getting comfortable with the feeling in a safe environment. You could try going to a rock climbing gym, doing low climbs, and letting yourself fall on purpose because they have soft floor mats to catch you. There's a bit of a trick to falling that you only really figure out by doing it, but once you get the hang of tucking and rolling, you'll feel a lot more confident about it

I had a similar experience a few years ago and the best advice I can give you is do everything until it's boring. I was scared to walk so I just sat on the horse until I got bored of that and wanted to walk then I got bored of walking and wanted to trot again. One other thing to think about is that even though it can honestly be terrifying to fall off of a giant furry beast you are ok physically now and that sometimes falling is part of the process. Also remember that it takes time to get your confidence back. It took months before I wasn't scared to trot anymore.

This has happened to me before, although I will say getting over fears like this is something everybody does differently. My fear is a tad bit different than yours. With me, I got jumped off and was scared to jump after that (pretty much only cantering jumps, I was fine doing little trot jumps. It was striding that made me nervous, I cant see a distance for the life of me default smiley xd.)

Something I wish I could've told myself sooner is this: You can't get over your fears if you don't face them! It's absolutely alright to be nervous and scared, that's just something that makes you human. Everybody gets scared of something.

What I think you should do is just take it slow. You don't need to scare the living life out of yourself to get over your fears, just take it nice and slow, get back into the flow of things. Another important thing to keep in mind: don't give up, don't let the fear get to you. It is incredibly hard at times getting over fears, but you shouldn't have to be nervous doing something you love.

Getting your confidence takes time and a lot of commitment, but it'll come back to you. You just need to work on it. I do hope this helps (and hopefully didn't come off as harsh, my apologies if it did.) default smiley :d

I have a 4 year old OTTB mare, and she tried to buck me off not too long ago, and she's knocked me off several times, so I have a hard time trusting her. I think the best thing you can do is just keep riding. Eventually, it'll get better.
