Question about companions

Hello, I looked in the information about companions topics but did not see anything in there about this. I know now that there is a button that says "change companion" on your horse page when they have a companion. I was wondering if you change a companion, do you get to keep the companion you're replacing or is it like when tack is replaced on a horse ?

Sadly when you replace a companion, the one you're replacing it with will be lost, you don't get to keep it.
